Wholesome Notes News

Updated May 16, 2019

We are so excited to announce a spring concert for all Jen's students, to be hosted June 20th at John Paul II School in Stony Plain. This is a semi-formal event, where students have the opportunity to come in and present all the hard work they have put in on their instrument.

Doors open at 6:45pm, and performances begin at 7pm. Students will know their place in the concert order before the date of the event, and will prepare a short statement for their audience about their song choice(s).

Due to time constraints, students are allowed a maximum of 3 songs. Microphones and amplification will be on hand, but students are expected to bring their guitar/ukulele and any accessories required for their performance- we will build a checklist during lesson times in preparation! A piano will be provided, and percussionists will discuss during lesson times! As this is hosted on a Thursday, please note all Thursday lessons on June 20th will have to be cancelled, though makeup time slots are available before/after for those who would like to.

The same way games are an important part of a sport, performing is an important part of music, as it offers us the challenge of preparing a song to a fuller extent, bracing for nerves and overcoming any hesitations we might have about standing in front of a crowd and offering what we can do. This practice affects our lives in many ways, from helping with school projects, interviews, or any form of public speaking. To encourage students bravery, and to take on the step right for them, all we ask is for each student to stand in front of the crowd- past that, what they present is up to them, but we love to listen!

Practicing listening and respecting our fellow musicians is also an important skill, so we also ask that families stay to listen to the performances after theirs, to encourage our peers and applaud their efforts. We should only have about 1.5 hours of performance, and a dessert bar will be out for everyone to enjoy.

Some students have already selected their song or set list, but if you haven’t, we will discuss this week and make a plan for what to perform, be it a whole song, a portion, or other form of presentation.

Thank you all so much for your hard work this year, we can’t wait to see you perform!
